Emeline "Emma" Colebank was born September 1, 1859 in Dunkard
Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania to Thornton and Sarah Hartley
Colebank. She married Kelso H. Root, son of Steven and Celia Ann Gain
Root, born April 9,1862 in Harrison County, West Virginia, on October 28,
1902. Kelso had previously been married to Elizabeth Grimes, daughter of
David H. and Marcelia Grimes, but she died around 1900.
Kelso and Emma lived in Buckhannon Ward 3, Upshur, West Virginia in the
1910 federal census. Their niece Audrey, age 15, lived with them and they
raised her. She was the daughter of Kelso's brother Adam.
Kelso worked in a glass factory. By 1920, Kelso was working in a coal mine
in District 135 of Buckhannon.
Kelso died on May 1, 1931 in Buckhannon Hospital, Buckhannon, Upshur
County, W. V. at age 69. No cause of death was given. Emeline died on
December 22, 1938, at home in Monongah, Grant District, Marion County,
West Virginia of a cerebral hemorrhage caused by hypertension. She is
buried in Mt. Clair Cemetery.
