Martha Ruth Colebank was born October 8, 1923 to
parents John M and Clara Nasman Colebank on their
farm home in Woodside Township 9 miles from Mentor,
Minnesota.  Martha was named after her grandmother
Martha McIndoo Colebank. She was known as Ruth
when she was growing up on her parent’s dairy, crop
and livestock farm in Woodside. Martha attended rural
Hillside District 87 grade school and then rode a bus to
Mentor High School where she graduated. Martha
worked on a 4-H club project every year as she grew up.
She took a year of normal teacher’s training at Thief
River Falls, Minnesota, a year at the University of
Minnesota in St. Paul and then taught in rural schools in
Norman and Watonwan County in Minnesota.
 Martha (also known as Marty) married Arthur Smith on
August 9, 1947 in the Maple Lake Church near the farm
where she grew up. The bride’s sister Grace Colebank
was maid of honor and the groom’s brother Cyril Smith
was best man. Pastor H S Larson officiated.
 Arthur, known as Art, was born in Ackworth, Iowa on
November 29, 1924 to Mr and Mrs Curtis Smith. Art
served in the U. S. Marines in WWII. After the war he

enrolled at the Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa where he majored in forestry. Art and
Marty lived in Indianola while Art completed his studies at the college. The family lived in
many locations as they followed Art’s work as a forester. They lived in New Haven, Connect-
icut for two years, Monticello, Arkansas five years, and Hamburg, Arkansas two and a half
years. Their children grew up in Arkansas. In 1969 they moved to DeRidder, Louisiana where
they lived until their divorce in 1983. Marty retained the family home in DeRidder.
  Marty returned to work in Little Rock as secretary in the Trust Department of the Union
National Bank for 5 years. She then managed the state employment office in DeRidder for 4
years, then worked as an administrative assistant in the Johnson and Scarbrough CPA (now
Charles E Scarbrough CPA) office in DeRidder.
  Martha has many interests and activities. She is an avid golfer, dabbles in gourmet cooking
and gardening. She also loves to travel when she can.

The children of Marty and Art Smith are:

Jeffrey Scott Smith – born June 17, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Peter Arthur Smith – born June 16, 1952 in Monticello Arkansas.

Alison Joan Smith – born January 28, 1955 in Monticello, Arkansas.
