West Virginia in the year of 1794 during President Washington's 2nd term in office. Mary Goodwin

James and Mary were only 19 years old when their first child Nancy was born. James lived almost
his entire life in Monongalia County. He was a tenant farmer and never owned any land of his own.
In the 1820 census James and Mary had one boy and three girls and lived in the Cass district west
of the Monongahela River. In the 1830 census, they had 2 boys and 6 girls. In 1840, they were just

two boys and five girls at home.
By 1860 they had moved back to Monongalia County (in Union District) east of the Monongahela
River near Stewartstown, West Virginia. Their youngest child Marinda, age 21, and grandson
Thomas Jefferson Colebank (daughter Jane's son) were living in the household. The following
summer, July 3, 1861, at age 17, Thomas enlisted in the Union Army to serve in the Civil War.
In their later years James and Mary lived about 3 miles southwest of Point Marion in a house on
Hoard road in the hamlet of Hoard, not far from the east bank of the Monongahela River.  Mary died
February 19, 1881 at the age of 67. James was a widower for 6 years. He was 73 years old when
he died of tuberculosis on November 22, 1867, They are buried side by side in the Eden United
