Jessie Adelia Colebank was born March 3, 1896
to L S and Martha McIndoo Colebank on their
farm in Crescent Township, Iroquois County,
Illinois, 12 miles east of Onarga. Jessie was 5
in 1901 when the family moved by train to a farm
near Madelia, Minnesota. Jessie attended the
one-room country school there in District 4. She
completed high school and normal teacher’s
training at Madelia High School.
Jessie taught school at Eureka, Montana for 2
years, boarding with her aunt Ella who was on
the school board. It was a primitive area so she
carried a gun while going to and from school.
After visiting with her sisters (Clara and Mary) in
Oregon she taught school in eastern Montana
for 2 years. The next few years she taught in
rural schools near St. James, Minnesota.
It was here she met Albert Lunz. They were
married in St. James February 5, 1921. Albert
was 23 and Jessie 25. Albert and Jessie farmed
near St. James. In 1925 their daughter Alberta
was born. The following year Albert became
gradually weaker from diabetes which was a
terminal illness in those days, so they moved to St. James where Jessie did dressmaking to
support the family. In 1928 they moved to Madelia where she learned the linotype trade from
her sister Olive. Albert died December 4, 1931 at age 33, two months before Alberta’s 7th
Jessie continued on her linotype job at the Madelia Times Messenger 4 more years until she
met Andrew Osmundson. They were married in Truman, Minnesota on March 16, 1935.
Andrew and Jessie farmed near Madelia. Only two years later, on April 26, 1937, Andrew died,
7 months before the birth of their son Andre.
Jessie then bought and operated a lady’s wear store in Mapleton, Minnesota. She sold it 2
years later and took a job as linotype operator where she worked 25 years until retiring in 1965.
Jessie then moved to Florida where her daughter lives. Eight years later, on June 19, 1973,
Jessie died at age 77. She is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Madelia, Minnesota.
The child of Jessie and Albert was:
Alberta Doreen Lunz – born February 1, 1925 in St. James, Minnesota. She married Roger
Carol Krummrie on September 9, 1950.
The child of Jessie and Andrew was:
Andre Errol Osmundson – born November 14, 1937 in Madelia, Minnesota. He married Jane
Alden Lane on June 5, 1971.
